This game piece or counter was likely made from either bone or ivory. It is not perfectly circular nor of uniform thickness. The size of the surface from which it was cut would determine the accuracy of such an operation. Manufacture may have included use of a lathe for the larger decorative element and a drill for the central element. This would have been used just as counters are used in board-games of today. The Latin word for counter is calculus.
