Silver Nomos

Description


This nomos (07GS0419) was issued by and minted in the city of Tarentum in Apulia between 240 and 228 BCE. The obverse depicts a galloping rider in military dress, crowned by a flying Nike (Victory), and bears the inscription KALLIKRA(TES). The reverse depicts a male figure riding a dolphin with trident in hand, and also crowned by a flying Nike. The reverse inscription references the coin's city of origin - TARAS.
