Silver Stater

Description

This stater (07GS0732) was minted in Lucania between 550 and 510 BCE. The obverse of the coin is a bull standing to the left, looking over its shoulder behind itself. Bulls are a common motif on ancient coinage as they symbolize strength, fertility, and agricultural prosperity - an important advertisement of local power. The reverse of the coin shows the same image in the incuse form; The image is impressed into the coin rather than raised. The coin also has a central pellet, and this unique image design of impression could have been used to deter counterfeiting. The inscription on the obverse "MY MY" could be in reference to a political figure, religion, or the monetary value of the coin.
