1/24th Electrum Stater

Description

This 1/24th stater (19A01) was minted in Sardis, Lydia in the sixth century BCE. The obverse depicts a lion head which is a distinct feature of Lydian coinage, symbolizing strength, power, and authority. The reverse depicts two incuse squares, demonstrating the way in which the coin was struck from the opposite side - which is to say, these squares are less part of the intentional design, and more an artefact of how the coin was struck. This is common in Lydian coinage and reflects the beginnings of early coin minting technology.

In the sixth century, Sardis Sardis was a hub for trade and commerce in the ancient Mediterranean during the 6th century. The production of coinage facilitated trade and further economic activities, growing the economic and political power of Lydia.
