Granite
Description
Rock Group
Igneous (Felsic)
Grain Size
This granite has a phaneritic texture (the grains of each mineral can be easily seen) with K-feldspar phenocrysts (larger more conspicuous crystals). This texture could also be described as porphyritic, referring to the phenocrysts.
Composition
This granite is composed of quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, muscovite, biotite and amphibole. Quartz being clear/colourless, plagioclase colourless to white, K-feldspar light pink, biotite black and amphibole black-dark green.
Key Features
The phaneritic texture of granite forms because the crystals grow from magma during slow cooling.
