Conglomerate

Description

Rock Group

Sedimentary

Grain Size

Conglomerate has a collection of large, rounded gravel, cemented together with a fine grained sedimentary matrix. These pebbles can also be called clasts or inclusions.

Composition

Conglomerates may include clasts with a variety of compositions.

Key Features

The pebbles are well-rounded, indicating that before they became a part of this conglomerate rock, they had been eroded and transported by water or wind, and likely broken off and travelled a long way from their original rock. This means that the inclusions are going to be older than the rock that they are found in.
